ABOUT US?

The Foundation for the Grace of Living is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on improving the quality of life for young children who come from low socio-economic communities in Colombia. The organisation began in 2011 due to the hard work and efforts of Amparo Elizabeth Mejia Ortiz - a mother, wife, sister and extraordinary friend. Day by day she demonstrated initiative and tenacity by fighting against the impoverishment suffered by the children and successfully built a foundation that has provided hope and opportunity for the boys and girls that have resided and continue to reside in our foundation.

The inspiration to carry out this dream originated from gran Chela, Graciaela Mejia Ortiz, who instituted a sense of social responsibility in her family members and provided guidance and mentorship on how to achieve happiness and help others in the community to find the grace of living.

The dreams and work of these two women has manifested in a foundation that has grown significantly since its inception. Currently we are assisting 450 children who participate in the multiple programs offered.

OUR MISSION

To develop and administrate programs that supplement mainstream education and focus on the primary necessities for early childhood. We are not affiliated with a religious denomination and we work to instill universal values in the children who attend including the value of love, generosity and honesty. We want to plant the seed of hope and the chance of a positive future in each individual child so that they may endeavor on their own journey to find the grace the living.

OUR VISION

Our vision is by 2020 to consolidate and operate on behalf of the Government of Colombia as the principal administrator of official early childhood programs. This will include the management and overseeing of programs across the country that focus on development, orientation, and the specific health and education needs of children in low socio-economic conditions.

We also envision that we will work to be certified and recongised by international bodies that specialize in the wellbeing of children and the provision of quality education.

OUR OBJECTIVES

General Objectives

Working for the community and developing programs that focus on the three integral needs of children – health, nutrition and education. This will in turn work towards improving quality of life and ensuring that the education programs rolled out facilitate and ensure that basic human rights are upheld. We endeavor to provide actual and practical opportunities for the children who attend and provide mentorship to them so as to contribute to the development of the future adults of the community and guide them on how to achieve their goals and live according to the values taught at the Foundation.

Specific Objectives

We endeavor to offer an alternative curriculum to the mainstream education available in early childhood. This includes the teaching of different languages (namely English), the introduction of international and national volunteers to introduce the children to the world-at-large and provide structured creative programs to give the children an opportunity to develop their identity through creative projects. We intend to run these alternative programs in a way that will provide a broader social experience to young children so that this may set a foundation at an early stage in their lives to break out and venture beyond the poverty cycle.

PROGRAMS

LA GRACIA DE CRECER

This is a comprehensive program that is targeted at children of pre-school age from low-socio economic backgrounds. The integral program focuses on health, nutrition and education. It aims to assist the children where the parents are unable to spend quality time with the children due to their work schedules or other inflexible comittments. This assistance derives from official government programs such as ICBF and other official support networks that offer co-financing. Currently there are two sub-programs that fall under this category that are serving 450 children.

LA GRACIA DE APRENDER

This program provides comprehensive instruction and mentoring through a structured curriculum for children aged between 5-10 years of age. It also provides alternative programs to the standard school curriculum that offer teaching in time management and other practical tasks. They are going to be prepared to go into adulthood with a subtsnatial understanding, skills and community values.

LA GRACIA DE ENVEJECER

In this program we aim to address the needs of seniors and adults with needs-specific training programs for health and recreation purposes. We endeavour to roll out this program once we further scope our budget and expand our facilities, which we plan to do in the near future. We are looking for sponsorship to develop this program.
